Yancey County commissioners opt into opioid settlement, adopt hazard mitigation plan and authorize Parkway Playhouse due diligence

At its March 9 regular meeting in Burnsville, the Yancey County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to opt into opioid litigation settlement funding, adopt the Toe River Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan and authorize due diligence on a proposed ownership transfer of the Parkway Playhouse.
County Attorney Donny Laws advised the board on the opioid settlement participation option and said, if the board approved, he would opt the county in. Vice Chairman Mark Ledford moved to opt in, Commissioner Sandi Norton seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The agenda had been amended earlier in the meeting to add discussion of opioid settlement funding prior to that vote (the agenda amendment also passed unanimously).
Emergency Management Director Brandon Price briefed the board on the Toe River Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan and presented an accompanying resolution. The board adopted the resolution, which updates the county’s all-hazards mitigation plan and preserves eligibility for certain federal and state mitigation grants and assistance in future disaster events.
Parkway Playhouse representative Melanie Veazey asked the board to consider transferring ownership of the Playhouse so the organization could qualify for additional grants and funding. After consideration and advice from County Attorney Laws, Commissioner Sandi Norton moved to proceed with due diligence on the proposed conveyance; Commissioner David Grindstaff seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
