Kings Mountain City Council voted unanimously Feb. 10 to approve two rezoning requests that planning staff said align with surrounding land uses.
The council approved Ordinance 26-07 to rezone about 78 acres at 186 Gage Road (parcel 49416) from Suburban Residential (SR) to Light Industrial (LI). Planning Director Henry Earle said the parcel sits between industrial uses along I‑85 and residential neighborhoods; staff and the Planning & Zoning Board recommended the change as consistent with the Future Land Use Map’s Auto‑Urban designation.
Council also approved Ordinance 26-08 to change parcels 10007 and 62645 on West Gold Street Ext. from Auto‑Urban Commercial (AU) to Mixed Use (MU). Senior Planner Brad Lagano said the MU designation would create a transition between single‑family homes to the west and heavier commercial uses (including the Walmart plaza) to the east. Planning staff and the Planning & Zoning Board recommended approval, calling the amendment reasonable and consistent with nearby development.
Mayor Robert Wagman opened both public hearings; no substantive opposition was recorded during the hearing on the Gage Road parcel, and one speaker (Vernon Baumrind of Charlotte) was listed for the West Gold Street Ext. hearing but no on‑record comment is included in the minutes. Both rezoning motions passed unanimously.
