The Seattle City Council on May 19 recorded a series of largely unanimous actions in addition to its major action on shelter expansion.
Appointments and confirmations: The council confirmed Andrew Lee as General Manager and CEO of Seattle Public Utilities for a term through Dec. 31, 2029. Lee was praised by council members for technical knowledge and leadership; he thanked the council and noted SPU’s priorities, including affordable rates, sea-level-rise protections and salmon restoration. Quinn Pham was confirmed as Director of the Department of Neighborhoods (term to Dec. 31, 2029); council members highlighted her community-organizing background and outreach experience.
Bills and ordinances: The council passed CB 121202, an ordinance authorizing SPU to execute amendments to an interlocal agreement with the King County Flood Control Zone District for the South Park Interim Flooding Preparedness and Response Program (measures include temporary flood walls and pump/bypass systems). The council also passed CB 121197 to impose historic-preservation controls on the Wooden House landmark designated under the Seattle Municipal Code (committee report and owner testimony preceded the vote).
Arts & cultural districts: The council unanimously adopted two resolutions establishing/reconfirming arts and cultural districts in Columbia Hillman City and Georgetown. Sponsors said the actions recognize long-standing creative communities and seek to unlock investments to support artists and cultural businesses.
Procedure: The introduction and referral calendar and consent calendar were adopted at the start of the meeting; the clerk recorded roll-call votes for each adoption and for the subsequent confirmations and bills. The meeting concluded with a reminder that the May 26 council meeting is canceled for Memorial Day and the council will next convene June 2 at 2:00 p.m.
