The Building Standards Board on Aug. 14, 2025, unanimously ordered demolition of the structure at 1711 East Carson, citing severe, long‑term structural decline that staff said posed a direct safety risk to neighbors and first responders.
Dangerous‑premises officer Cynthia Santana presented extensive photographic evidence of collapsed balcony flooring, rotted and water‑damaged rafters and joists, detached siding, missing wall sections, exposed framing and failing foundations. Santana said the condition had deteriorated over years with no permitted work since 1999 and that city contractors would not be sent to abate the property because doing so would be unsafe.
Erica Smith, an heir, told the board she and her sister had no plans to repair or keep the house and were likely to sell the land. Board member Joel Solis moved to find the property a public nuisance under City Code Article 8, Chapter 6, add utilities to the order (cut utilities), and require demolition within 30 days; Kayla Miranda seconded and the motion passed 5–0. Members asked staff to prioritize the property for contractor scheduling once appeal periods expire.
