Northglenn student chosen for sesquicentennial time-capsule art

The Northglenn City Council meeting included a presentation of the Northglenn High School Time Capsule Art Competition and the unveiling of the winning entry.
Amanda Peterson, director of parks, recreation and culture, said the project ties into the city’s sesquicentennial celebration. She said a time capsule originally installed in 1976 at Eleanor M. Wyatt Centennial Park is being reopened and augmented for Colorado Day 2026, and the city invited Northglenn High School students to contribute art.
Michael Stricker provided background on the sesquicentennial event, saying the city will hold a celebration on August 1 at Eleanor M. Wyatt Centennial Park and that a committee of residents, boards and council members will meet beginning the week after the council meeting to plan the event and the time capsule contents.
Student Jade Rios, the contest winner, spoke briefly about her piece and hopes for the future: "I just wanted to be happy and, like, almost, like, silly because that's how I want the future to be... like, cleaner air, cleaner earth." Council members invited the student and other guests to the dais for a photo.
Why it matters
The time-capsule project engages local students and preserves local history; city staff said the conceptual park design created for the sesquicentennial will be considered for inclusion in the capsule and part of public outreach for park redesign.
Next steps
A planning committee will meet to finalize what goes in the time capsule and to coordinate public outreach for the August 1 unveiling.
