Wilson High students report record $104,000 raised for pediatric cancer at board meeting

Alana Sink and Maddie Taylor, student leaders of Wilson High School’s MiniTHON program, reported to the school board that the club raised a record $104,000 during its February 28 dance marathon and related events.
The students described a year of fundraising that included a Gold Out football game, a pickleball tournament, a glow run, a luxury purse bingo, a 3‑on‑3 basketball tournament and a popular fall corn maze. Sink said the MiniTHON leadership team organized captains across hospitality, communications, entertainment, school relations, family relations, finance, morale, special events, operations, merchandise and recruitment to run the year’s events.
Maddie Taylor said the money will be used in partnership with Four Diamonds at Penn State to fund direct services and research. She said the total will support 2,983 hours of music therapy, 696 hours of child‑life services, 522 days for a clinical nutritionist, 104 days for social‑work teams, 97 hours of ongoing research and 23 months of maintenance for research equipment. The students thanked sponsors, the district and volunteers and highlighted that MiniTHON programs across the state also increased their totals this year.
President Denny and board members praised the students’ work. The board voted to accept a separate slate of community donations later in the meeting.
The presentation also noted that the club reached $1,000,000 in lifetime fundraising for MiniTHON efforts across the last 13 years. The board did not take additional action on the presentation itself; the students’ report concluded with trustees thanking them and wishing seniors well.
