The Monona City Council on May 18 approved an operating budget amendment to pay invoices for temporary heating equipment rented after a boiler failed in the lower level of the public library.
City administrator Neil explained staff identified a temporary heating solution to keep the space operational while replacement lead times for a new boiler were deemed too long. "The invoices that are included ... are both for the actual rental of the equipment, the installation of the equipment, and the removal of the equipment. So it's just under $15,000," Neil said, describing the rental covering about a three‑month period.
The council suspended the rules to take the item out of order for immediate action, then moved and approved the resolution by voice vote so the city could pay the vendor invoice. Neil said staff is evaluating options and planning for a full replacement project that will take the lower level out of commission when installed; staff also identified alternative meeting space if needed while replacement work proceeds.
The amendment covers payment for rental, installation and removal of temporary heating equipment; council members asked staff to monitor the summer for whether temporary cooling would be needed, but Neil said that is not expected at this time.
