Fleetwood Area School District board approves curriculum updates, special education plan, hires and budgets

The Fleetwood Area Board of School Directors on March 17 approved a series of routine and programmatic items, including curriculum changes, personnel actions, and budget and contract approvals.
The board, meeting in regular session and called to order by Vice President Adam S. Chernow at 7:00 PM, unanimously approved the minutes of its Feb. 17 meeting and the treasurer’s report. A motion to pay the monthly bills also carried on roll call; the minutes list the vote as aye by the board members and unusually include Jason E. Valick among the ayes despite the attendance list that identifies Valick as absent earlier in the minutes.
On academic programming, the board approved additions and revisions to career and technical and elective courses, including Yearbook, News Magazine, Photo Studio, Intro to Engineering, CAD Concepts, Advanced CAD, multiple Woods/Shop courses, Construction and Manufacturing, Intro to Electricity, Metals, Engineering Design, Photography 1 and related classes. The motion was made by Brandi Brown and seconded by John L. Noll Jr.
The board approved the Fleetwood Area School District Special Education Comprehensive Plan, effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029. Michael D. Noll moved the plan, which passed on a roll-call vote.
Personnel actions approved in a single motion by John L. Noll Jr. included the appointment of Peter Slay as districtwide school psychologist effective March 18, 2026 (Master’s+60, Step 11); hiring of Shaun Taney as middle school assistant boys’ soccer coach (effective March 18, annual stipend $1,667, pending paperwork); and hiring of Melville Fegely as high school football coach (effective March 18, annual stipend $6,639, pending paperwork). The board also approved transfers, including Janelle McAllister from high school custodian to Willow Creek Elementary lead custodian (effective March 23 at $22.51/hour) and Alexis Schultz from middle school to high school Health & Physical Education teacher effective Aug. 18, 2026. The board recorded several resignations (including Marissa Diodata, high school math teacher, effective June 5, 2026) and approved FMLA or qualifying leaves for staff members as listed in the minutes.
On policy, the board approved the second reading of policies 218.1 (Weapons); 317 (Conduct/Disciplinary Procedures); 318 (Attendance and Tardiness — new title); 320 (Freedom of Speech in Non-school Setting); 323 (Tobacco and Vaping Products — new title); and 340 (Responsibility for Student Welfare). The motion was made by Elizabeth Hersh and seconded by Brandi Brown.
The board approved a $20,000 contract with Reading Made Easy, LLC to provide Wilson program services and materials for the district’s extended school year program. James M. Younker moved the contract; Michael D. Noll seconded the motion.
Brandi Brown moved and John L. Noll Jr. seconded approval of the Berks Career and Technology Center budget for 2026–27. The minutes record Fleetwood’s share as $967,518 for regular education students and $37,772 for special education students.
The board also approved billable facility-use requests from the Fleetwood Area Baseball Association (HS auxiliary gym, $120), Fleetwood Community Theater (Willow Creek LGI, $1,014.88) and Tri-Valley YMCA (AM/MS gyms, $1,024).
The meeting was adjourned at 7:27 PM following a motion by Michael D. Noll and second by Lisa J. Bogacki. The minutes were signed by Secretary Michael D. Noll.
