Robert Godfrey, assistant coach for the Bitter Creek speech and debate team, addressed the council during petitions to ask for community support for students who qualified for national competition in Richmond, Virginia.
"My name is Robert Godfrey. I am here as a proud ... assistant coach for the Bitter Creek speech and debate team," Godfrey said. He described fundraising efforts — bake sales, raffles and other local activities — and said raffle tickets are $10 and available from team members and at his shop, Standard Plumbing. He listed raffle items donated for fundraising, including a Bosch tabletop mixer and a locally made Kel-Tec firearm.
Council members asked for clarifications about where tickets could be purchased and how many students from Sweetwater County were attending nationals; Godfrey said the drawing is June 1 and reiterated ticket availability and the team’s outreach efforts.
The council expressed support and thanked Godfrey for the presentation.
