Election office reports ballot returns, pre-canvass schedule and precinct change ahead of Lawrence County primary

"Right now in Lawrence County, 19,708" Democrats and "30,166" Republicans were recorded, the director said, adding libertarians at 260 and other-party registrants at 7,224 for a county total of 57,358. The office told the board it sent roughly 1,000 letters earlier in the year to permanent-mail voters to confirm continued status; about 4,622 voters requested mail-in ballots and 3,688 ballots had been returned to the office by the time of the meeting.
The director said pre-canvass — opening envelopes and scanning ballots — will begin at 7:00 a.m. the next day. He told the board results would be posted after 08:00 and emphasized a hard stop: voters have until 08:00 the following day to deliver ballots to the office to be counted. Staff clarified the courthouse front doors and an official drop box will be available and secured until 8:00 p.m. to accept ballots.
The board also confirmed a precinct consolidation implemented since the last meeting: voters who previously cast ballots at the sports center on Route 65 (Chenango 3) will vote at the fire hall on Byers Avenue (104 West Byers Avenue). Staff said signage and voter notices were distributed.
The board had no public commenters in the room and recessed to the call of the chair after completing business. The board noted certification of the election will occur later in June.
