Council temporarily assigns city-administrator duties to Police Chief John Burke with pay adjustments for police leadership

Facing a current vacancy in the city administrator position, the City Council authorized Chief of Police John Burke to assume the role and responsibilities of interim city administrator in addition to his duties as chief. The arrangement includes an annualized salary adjustment of $20,000 for Chief Burke, effective 05/19/2026, and a $10,000 annualized adjustment for Deputy Chief Thomas Walsh for duties he will cover during the interim period.
The temporary arrangement will be reviewed by the council and Chief Burke approximately three months after it begins, or earlier if requested by either party, and may be terminated at any time by either party. Upon termination, the parties’ responsibilities and compensation will revert to pre-adjustment levels.
A council member moved to approve the temporary expansion of duties as presented; the motion was seconded and approved on roll call. Several council members thanked Chief Burke and Deputy Chief Walsh for stepping into the temporary roles and noted the council will continue work to identify permanent alternatives for filling the city administrator position.
Staff and the council said the arrangement will be reflected in the minutes and that the council intends to evaluate permanent options during the temporary assignment period.
