Board orders targeted K–6 and full 7–12 social studies standards reviews

The committee voted unanimously on May 18 to pursue a targeted review of K–6 social studies standards and a full review of 7–12 social studies standards following passage of new state legislation that adds topics and concepts to secondary social studies.
Megan Everett, director of teaching and learning, outlined two options for the board since the statutory changes require teachers to have updated guidance by 2028. Staff recommended a targeted review at the elementary level and a full review for secondary to balance thoroughness and speed. Everett said many of the new topics are high-school specific and that K–6 would likely require only limited insertions.
Board member discussion focused on sequencing and workload: several members argued a targeted elementary update would be faster while the more complex secondary standards need a full review process. The committee voted to send the planned timeline and process to the full board for consideration.
Staff will return with a detailed timeline and proposed writing-committee plan to ensure teachers have required materials in time for implementation.
