Cochise supervisors approve District 2 community grants for mobile market, youth basketball and veterans clinic

On May 19, 2026, the Cochise County Board of Supervisors approved three District 2 community enhancement fund awards to support local food access, youth sports and veteran services.
Supervisor Madeline Gomez moved to approve a $5,000 award for a Douglas-area local cooperative project coordinated with Arizona Border Alliance to bring a converted mobile bus filled with fresh produce to county communities. Jillian, a small-scale farmer and Cochise Farm to School coordinator, described the mobile market and voucher distribution: "Our part of the project as the coop is to bring the ... mobile market to the Douglas Farmers Market for free food distribution in partnership with several Douglas organizations," she said, outlining partnerships with local agencies, hospitals and the WIC clinic.
Julian Gonzales, a small grower, described efforts to build a local food system and community gardens so residents can access fresh produce locally.
The board also approved a $4,000 allocation to Mundo Basketball to expand free basketball opportunities for youth across the county; supervisors said the program had grown from about 50 kids to several times that number and keeps youth active. Separately, the board approved $5,000 to Ballar Entertainment LLC to help host a veteran claim clinic and resource fair in Douglas, which staff said will provide on-site claims assistance and connect veterans with benefits and services.
All three motions were made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
