The Solid Waste Management Authority reviewed proposed uses of approximately $58,400 in SB 1383 local assistance grant funds administered through CalRecycle and described a process by which the Del Norte Solid Waste Task Force will prioritize equipment and supply requests from community partners.
"We have a total of about $58,400 for allocation," the director said, and outlined six applicant organizations seeking equipment or infrastructure support, including Mission Possible (truck request), the Community Food Council (food preservation supplies, backup generator), the Family Resource Center Food Bank (composting bins), Tallawadanie (community composting expansion and storage), Grace Lutheran (backup generator and infrastructure support), and the Open Door Community Garden (composting systems).
Staff described eight assessment questions with percentage weightings that task‑force members will use to score each request (for example: expansion of food rescue, community value relative to cost, resiliency benefits). The director asked board members to suggest any changes to the weighting before the task force meets; Craig Strong, chair of the Del Norte Solid Waste Task Force, said the task force will review materials at its June 5 meeting and return recommendations for final board action.
A board member disclosed a potential conflict — that a spouse works for one of the applicant organizations — and the director said legal counsel recommended the member recuse from the final funding vote.
The process is advisory: the task force will complete weighted scoring and come back to the Solid Waste Authority with a prioritized list for final allocation decisions.
