Broadband update: OLT 12 goes live; project advances slowly with underground work remaining

She said OLT 12 went live on March 19 and added roughly 200 passings, bringing the VADI 2022 program to 1,558 active passings (separate from the 1,320 count in VADI 2021). “Only about 5 more miles of fiber have been constructed since we last met in March,” she said, adding that most remaining work is underground and requires splicing. Carly also said AEP’s distribution work is nearing completion and GigaBeam is working on agreements to place three remaining OLT cabinets.
Board members clarified that an active passing means the fiber exists and is serviceable but does not guarantee a customer is connected. Carly noted the project’s goal is 8,822 active testings for the contract period and that GigaBeam plans to serve more addresses under the project’s build target.
Next steps: Staff will continue to oversee construction and placement agreements; minor remaining tasks and splicing must be completed before many more passings can go live.
