Library launches 'Library on the Go 2' mobile unit to bring services into neighborhoods

The library announced the launch of Library on the Go 2, a mobile outreach unit that will bring books and other services directly to neighborhoods, senior living centers and community events, Lisa Gonzalez, a library staff member, said.

Gonzalez said the program is intended to "meet patrons where they are" and expand access for people who have trouble visiting physical branches during regular hours. "The library on the go is all about access," she said.

She described a dedicated physical collection carried on the vehicle that is not available in the library's online catalog and therefore can be difficult to find elsewhere: "That means that you'll never see any of these books in the online collection because they are out and about and it's very hard to locate them at any given point," Gonzalez said. She added that the mobile collection may offer "the best selection in town," a characterization presented as her assessment.

The mobile unit's stops are listed on the library calendar, Gonzalez said. Most stops will recur; the unit will also run special pop-up events timed to observances and community gatherings, including Juneteenth, Earth Day and school family literacy nights.

Gonzalez said some neighborhood stops will effectively function as a branch for patrons who lack transportation, enabling them to check out and return books at times that fit local schedules, such as right after school or at evening events.

Speakers framed the service as a community connector and closed by emphasizing the program's equity mission. "Access to knowledge and imagination should not depend on your circumstances," a staff member said.
