Public Works recognizes Steven Ohinaga as April employee of the month

The committee honored Steven Ohinaga, a senior maintenance worker in the Parks and Open Space Division, for 11 years of service and leadership on downtown horticulture; the award includes one day (8 hours) of administrative leave, staff said.
The Public Works and Utilities Committee used part of its May 18 meeting to recognize Steven Ohinaga as the April 2026 employee of the month.
Director McDonald praised Ohinaga’s work ethic and steady contributions to the Parks and Open Space Division, saying his attention to detail ‘‘plays a major role in ensuring that the Santa Fe Plaza remains in excellent condition and residents and visitors enjoy the seasonal landscaping.’’ McDonald noted Ohinaga’s work in the downtown flower program and greenhouse operations.
Andrew Garcia, Ohinaga’s direct supervisor, said he and Ohinaga worked closely during the COVID-19 period and called Ohinaga ‘‘an outstanding worker’’ and ‘‘a champ.’’ Garcia said he has known Ohinaga’s family for years and that Ohinaga’s reliability is a major asset to plaza and downtown horticulture operations.
Director Renasant added that the employee award carries a perk: "this does come with a, 1, day or 8 hours of administrative leave to, enjoy," giving the honoree paid time off in recognition of the award.
Ohinaga’s length of service to the city was noted: McDonald said Ohinaga has been with the city for 11 years, beginning on the wildland fire crew before joining the horticulture crew. The committee invited Ohinaga to come forward for brief applause and thanks.
