Historic District Commission recommends two new commissioners to City Commission

The Kalamazoo Historic District Commission voted to recommend two applicants — Mark Dunham and Elijah Ish — to the City Commission for appointment to the Historic District Commission.

Both applicants spoke to the commission about their experience and interest. Mark Dunham, who said he has lived in the Stewart neighborhood for more than 40 years, argued that historic designation has helped preserve the neighborhood’s housing stock. Elijah Ish described restoring a 1924 duplex in the Stewart Historic District and said his research and public-facing work as an executive search consultant would be useful on the commission.

Commissioners asked each applicant how they would weigh preservation standards against cost concerns for homeowners. Ish said context matters and that while he would oppose self-imposed poor decisions, he would seek “some nuance” when a homeowner is trying to save a severely neglected house. Dunham emphasized research skills, including using Sanborn maps, to support decisions.

After discussion about neighborhood representation and how long current members have served, a motion to recommend both applicants to the City Commission passed by roll call with all commissioners voting yes.

The recommendation means the City Commission will review the candidates and, if it approves, finalize appointments. The Historic District Commission’s staff said it will prepare the memo to the City Commission before that body’s posting deadline.

Next steps: the commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to the City Commission for formal appointment consideration.
