The City of York council on Jan. 16 heard a report that a recently tested collaboration between Public Works and the Police Department reduced traffic risk during high-speed street maintenance.
City Administrator Dr. Crawford introduced Public Works Director James Paul, who described the department’s effort to coordinate with officers during surface maintenance along Highway 81 and other high-speed stretches. Paul said crews asked Police Chief Jaden and officers — including Officer Dallas Bruning and Sergeant Rodenberg — to stage a law-enforcement vehicle with lights activated to warn motorists and slow traffic.
“This works,” James Paul said. “All employees came back safe. No incidents.” He told the council the presence of officers and marked vehicles noticeably reduced vehicle speeds near the work zone.
Dr. Crawford said the city will consider repeating the police–Public Works approach for future projects in high-speed areas and pursue more systematic inspections of heavy equipment to avoid unexpected breakdowns.
The council did not take any direct action on the report; it was presented as part of the city administrator’s update.
