Northbrook board approves Walters Avenue water-main design work tied to resurfacing grant

The Village of Northbrook approved a resolution to proceed with design engineering for Walters Avenue, pairing grant-funded resurfacing with water-main replacement and possible bicycle and pedestrian improvements.
Village engineering staff told the board they applied for and received grant funding for resurfacing and that the water main in the corridor is in “very poor condition,” making replacement a logical pairing with resurfacing. Staff said they performed preliminary outreach and received feedback about retaining parking while improving sidewalks, intersections and safety hazards.
“...we did some phase 1 preliminary outreach with the community,” the village engineer said, noting the project will move through design engineering over the calendar year. The engineer said options considered included a side path or separated bike lanes and that staff heard residents value on-street parking.
Trustee Abomey Allen moved the resolution and the board approved the motion by roll call. Staff said construction is planned for the coming fiscal year contingent on design completion and coordination with resurfacing schedules. No construction contract was awarded at the meeting; the vote authorized design work only.
The board also took routine items later in the meeting and voted to enter closed session.
