The Scotland Board of Selectmen on April 21 discussed the town’s draft 2026–27 budget and set public dates for review. Treasurer David Zito presented the treasurer’s report and said most town departments submitted budgets for review by the board. First Selectman Dana Barrow Jr. said the town faces an unexpected $525,000 increase in education costs this year due to higher enrollment at PHHS, a one-year spike the board said they expect will not repeat in future years.
The board voted to hold a public hearing on the 2026–27 budget on May 26 at 7:00 p.m., and scheduled the Annual Town Meeting for June 9 at 7:00 p.m. Mike Gurnack made the motion to approve the dates; John Aldrich seconded and the motion carried. The hearing and town meeting will give residents an opportunity to review proposed spending and ask questions before the town finalizes the budget.
Barrow noted the Town Hall renovation project is currently out to bid and that the town retains the right to reject all bids if financing is not in place. That caveat will factor into the board’s final budget decisions. The board did not record a final bottom-line tax-rate decision at the meeting; the draft budget remained under review.
