The Geneva Preservation Commission voted to approve the applicant’s proposal to remove aluminum siding and restore the underlying wooden siding at 327 North 4th Street at its May 19 meeting. The project follows a stop‑work order triggered when contractors partially removed aluminum cladding and exposed historic wood siding previously covered before 1998.
Joshua Summers, production manager for Expert Roofing, told the commission that the team has completed lead‑abatement testing, will perform wet‑scribe lead removal and that the contractor intends to restore and repaint surviving wood siding and replace only the deteriorated sections with in‑kind material where necessary. Anthony, another contractor on the project, said fascia and gutters will be replaced where rotted and that the recent reroofing and ventilation work will improve long‑term performance.
Staff reminded the commission that the Historic Preservation Commission does not regulate paint color and that the applicant’s planned white paint with gray gable accents is a separate administrative matter. The applicant also said it has local contractors lined up and that exact trim and scallop details will be matched where feasible.
A commissioner (speaker 5) moved to approve the application as presented; a second followed and the motion passed on a roll call vote with Jensen, McManus, Phillips, Solomon and Tobler voting Aye. Staff said the applicant will receive a confirmation email the following day and that the building department will complete the permit process. The commission set lead abatement and restoration to be completed per the agreed scope and for any discovered hidden damage to be addressed during final work.
