Board postpones decision on 3-ft stone wall and iron gate at Monte Vista to allow redesign with neighborhood

The Historic Preservation Advisory Board voted Aug. 22 to postpone decision on case 2025-205, a request to construct a 3-foot stone wall with iron fencing and pedestrian/vehicle gates at 507 East Wizache, and scheduled the item for Sept. 17 to allow the applicant to work with the neighborhood association and staff on a revised design.
Applicant Mickey Hendrix said the wall and ironwork are intended to protect children and pets and to provide privacy and security. Betty Bushei of the Conservation Society (voicemail) opposed the proposed stone wall and metalwork as inconsistent with historic guidelines and warned against placing a masonry wall where none historically existed. Brian Reed, president of the Architectural Review Committee, offered a compromise — a lower stone base with more transparent ironwork — and recommended the most invisible option consistent with safety.
Commissioners discussed visibility, safety around an existing pond/lake on the property, and whether a one-foot or three-foot wall would best balance historic guidance and safety. Because the applicant said redesign would impose additional cost but was open to discussion, the board moved to continue the item to the next available hearing date to facilitate coordination with staff and neighborhood representatives.
