Sarasota board adopts consent agenda as residents debate scripted reading programs and personnel follow-up

The Sarasota County School Board on May 19 adopted its consent agenda after a lengthy public-comment period that included praise for the district’s recovery of referendum funds, questions about instructional materials, and a parent’s allegation about a teacher at Bay Haven School.
Superintendent Connor highlighted consent-agenda items that he said expand literacy supports and other services: an amended agreement with the Lassinger Center to provide job-embedded professional learning for kindergarten through second-grade teachers; approval of the Summit K–12 contract to replace the district’s current platform for personalized instruction; an agreement with the Boys & Girls Club for after-school programming; and an annual MOU with All Faiths Food Bank for the summer hunger campaign. Connor also announced a transportation-app transition and gave a July 27 deadline for families to register for first-day transportation on the new MyRide K12 platform.
Several public commenters focused on instructional approach and teacher autonomy. Mary Ginley, a former teacher, warned against a scripted-only approach to reading instruction and said teachers need “a full box of strategies” rather than a single program. “Just follow the script,” she said, criticizing what she described as overreliance on a scripted science-of-reading program.
Parent Erin Smith spoke during the consent-agenda public comment on agenda item 8.11 and said her family followed the district’s procedures after her daughter was publicly humiliated by a teacher at Bay Haven School; Smith said the teacher was later reappointed and that the family experienced silence from the district. “My daughter was publicly humiliated by her fifth grade teacher,” Smith said. The chair asked Superintendent Connor to have a member of staff follow up with the family.
Other residents praised the summer-feeding partnership with All Faiths Food Bank; one commenter cited an estimate that about 25,000 children will be served by mobile distribution, school pantries and backpacks from June 1 to Aug. 30.
After board discussion defending the importance of professional development and clarifying that the Lassinger Center work is supplemental rather than a replacement curriculum, the board approved the consent agenda and minutes by voice vote (motion to approve minutes and consent items moved by Mr. Edwards and seconded by Mrs. Barker). The consent agenda passed unanimously.
