Principal Taylor of Sunview presented an overview of first-grade writing instruction and invited students to read samples from a classroom book at the board meeting May 19.
Taylor described instruction that begins with sentence structure and moves to a single paragraph outline (SPO) to teach topic sentences, supporting details and conclusions. She noted that students used research-based activities and published a class book through Student Treasures; students read aloud pieces on friendship, kindness and recess activities.
"They're published authors, which I think is really cool," Principal Taylor said, describing the project and student engagement. The principal highlighted progression across the year, including procedural writing tied to hands-on activities such as planting sunflowers.
Board members applauded the students and district staff said these classroom projects align with the HMH curriculum and support writing development for early grades.
