County officials press for faster courthouse elevator repair and explore local jail options

During the May 19 meeting, Council member Gitz raised accessibility and safety concerns after receiving an invoice for elevator brake repairs with an approximately $40,000 price and a reported 26-week lead time. Gitz said the slow repair timeline is creating hardships for jurors and courthouse users and said he will press for quicker action. "I had a client this morning... he did have to stop after the 2nd Floor... It's certainly taxing on everybody that works in this building," Gitz said.

Board members discussed the county’s ongoing practice of sending people to out-of-county jails because of overcrowding and whether to explore using the former juvenile detention facility as a local housing option. Several members said a local facility could reduce transport risks and create downtown jobs for correctional staff; others emphasized the need for collaborative community planning and cost comparisons. "I feel like the council is leaning more toward, no new facility, but... does anybody wanna utilize this facility, the former juvenile detention facility?" Gitz said as members agreed to discuss tours and bring probation, sheriff and prosecutor staff into the conversation.

Members also described courthouse maintenance issues beyond the elevator, including floor repairs and landscaping that affect public access and appearance. Several participants urged that courthouse priorities be coordinated with commissioners so repairs can be scheduled and communicated.
