Superintendent: enrollment steady, discipline low; kindergarten sections to be reassessed

Freeburg CCSD 70 Superintendent Missus Hargan told the board the district’s enrollment has been largely unchanged over the past two weeks while discipline incidents increased slightly in May compared with April.
Hargan said enrollment had not changed in the prior 13 days and noted, “we are right now at 56 kindergarteners that are registered. We are currently at 57,” reflecting recent registration movement. She told the board administrators will continue to monitor numbers over the summer before finalizing sectioning decisions.
On discipline, Hargan reported zero in-school suspensions (ISS) and zero out-of-school suspensions (OSS) in April, and four ISS and one OSS in May. She cautioned that end-of-year behavioral shifts are common as testing ends and weather improves.
Board members discussed class-size considerations for kindergarten, noting that younger students can require more adult attention and that moving teachers between grades can disrupt teacher development. One board member said, in essence, that a kindergarten class of 15 can feel like 20 depending on students’ developmental needs; another noted some incoming kindergarteners have individualized plans (IUPs) that affect classroom staffing needs.
Hargan said the district is currently planning for three kindergarten sections but will reassess if registration increases; she emphasized that the decision will be driven by student needs and screening data rather than a fixed numeric threshold.
What’s next: Administration will monitor registrations and screening results over the summer and report back to the board before staffing and class configurations are finalized for 2026–27.
