Oconee County Council approves first reading of moratorium on large planned subdivisions

Councilman Don Mize introduced Ordinance 2026-15 and offered a personal statement in support; Council Chairman Matthew Durham said he agreed with enacting the ordinance. The measure passed on first reading in title only by a unanimous 5–0 vote.
The measure drew public comment before the reading. Mr. Devin Clay addressed Council expressing concerns about the proposed moratorium; Mr. Tom Markovich told the council he opposed Moratorium Ordinance 2026-15; and Mr. Lee Sheehan submitted four written questions for the record. Council acknowledged those comments during the meeting and signaled the matter will return for further consideration at subsequent readings.
