Lynnwood briefs on World Cup impacts: increased transit service, local events and policing plans

City staff and police briefed the Lynnwood City Council on preparations for the FIFA World Cup and related local activations.

Ryan Bush, the city’s tourism project manager, said the World Cup tournament will begin June 11 in North America and that six matches will be hosted in Seattle between June 15 and July 6. He outlined local community offerings — mall viewing parties, library and park youth soccer events, a public-art soccer ball project led by the arts commission, and a summer concert series timed near match days. Bush said hotels in Lynnwood had not shown the expected surge in bookings and that county-level organizers had revised regional visitor projections down from an earlier 750,000 estimate to roughly 350,000.

Deputy Chief Steichen described regional security and transit coordination: Sound Transit will increase train frequency and staffing on match days, community transit is expanding shuttle hours to match rail service, and law-enforcement agencies are coordinating staffing and intelligence briefings. He said specialized units and motor escorts will be available; some operational costs are being reimbursed through grants from Seattle and a Department of Homeland Security grant for FIFA operations. Steichen noted uncertainty about how many commuters will use Lynnwood’s light-rail station on match days but said the city would play a key role as the northernmost stop on the line.

Council members asked about local event listings and communications; staff said the city’s tourism website (explorelynnwood.com) will list local activations and that staff are sharing event calendars and a community-collaboration event partnership process for organizer support.
