The Lafayette City council approved allocating up to $600,000 in program-year 2025 home funding to rehabilitate 10 affordable rental units in the Historic Jeff Building.
Michelle Reynolds of the Lafayette Housing Authority said the funding was approved by the Lafayette Housing Consortium and will cover rehabilitation of 10 of the building’s 74 units as part of a larger $12.7 million project. "This will be for the rehabilitation of 10 affordable rental home units in the historic Jeff Center," Reynolds said.
Marie Morse of Homestead Resources said the Jeffersonian (Historic Jeff) was rehabilitated about 20 years ago and the new work will help the building last another 20 years. Board members clarified the work covers residential units only, not commercial space, and the renovation will proceed over roughly a year as units are vacated and rehoused.
The motion to approve the allocation passed; the chair recorded the vote as three yeses and one abstention.
Next steps: Housing Authority and Homestead Resources will proceed with project planning and unit-by-unit renovations under the scope described to the council.
