Parents press Malverne officials on Herbert field drainage and middle‑school athletics; engineers to perform borings

"There is about a 3 feet incline...the engineers are gonna come in and do borings, which was explained to me deep holes in the area, 5 of them, that will allow us to estimate the water line and just what it would take in order for us to be able to either fill or whatever needs to be done to be able to have the drainage done well," the superintendent said.
Parents and PTA leaders also asked about timing and funding. The superintendent said the district has one grant already filed and another with a June 16 deadline and that the district will continue to seek grants and donations and to rebuild capital reserves. A parent referenced a program (New York Plays) that can fund up to 80% of certain renovations but requires a 20% local match and proof that those matching funds are committed and available.
On athletics, a parent asked how to establish a middle‑school basketball team. The superintendent directed the parent to contact the athletic director, Mr. Palin, for specific procedural steps and said the district is preparing modest site improvements in the maintenance budget (shed removal, bicycle‑rack relocation, picnic tables) while engineers assess drainage for larger work.
No formal decisions were made; officials said they will share the borings results and continue updates with parents and the board.
