Ida Public Library director outlines summer reading, bookmobile shelter and accessibility projects

Mindy Long, director of the Ida Public Library, presented an update to the Belvidere City Council outlining the library’s summer programming and recent facility work.
Long distributed summer reading guides and slips for weekly submissions, described a partnership with the King County Cougars that offers two free tickets to participants, and detailed events including a June 11 touch‑a‑truck program and an August 4 media event tied to the bookmobile shelter grant. She said stairs recently poured were settling and the library hopes to reopen that entrance by the end of the week.
Long described maintenance work in the aging building, including replacement of stripped wiring affected by leaks and a plan to encase new wiring in PVC to prevent future damage. She also noted efforts to add four raised garden beds accessible to people using wheelchairs and an expanded take‑home craft kit program (including senior kits funded by an agent of benevolent society grant for residents aged 65 and up).
In response to Alderman Peterson’s question about school-district outreach on literacy, Long said the library sends program flyers to the district’s virtual backpack and partners with the Rockford Literacy Council for tutoring, but that the library’s mission is to foster reading through programming rather than deliver formal literacy instruction.
Long encouraged council members and residents to attend library events and to stop by for printed or online materials about programs and volunteer opportunities.
