The Oglesby City Council on May 18 discussed a vacant zoning administrator position left after the retirement of City Clerk Kleinard. The presiding official and council members said that office staff have been handling zoning work informally but that the technical and paperwork burden is unsustainable.
A city code provision was read aloud: the zoning administrator is designated by the mayor subject to council approval and has responsibility for interpreting and enforcing the land-development code, reviewing building and sign permits, entering inspections as needed, attending plan commission and zoning board-of-appeals meetings when requested, deciding interpretation questions, and serving on the development review committee. The council noted there are no specific degree requirements in the code for the role.
Councilors agreed to compile candidate names and bring them to a closed session at the next meeting for further discussion and to encourage qualified residents to contact Mayor Curran about interest in the appointment.
The council directed staff to prepare names and follow the mayoral appointment with council consent as required by the code; no appointment was made at this meeting.
