Northbrook board approves Braver Angels workshop, hears sustainability, public-safety and public-works updates

Trustee Reese moved and the board approved a motion directing staff to engage Braver Angels of Illinois and the Northbrook Public Library to host a depolarization workshop titled “Depolarizing Ourselves” on October 11 from 1–5 p.m. Sam Rice, assistant to the village manager, outlined the event goals: increasing attendees’ awareness of inner polarizers and teaching strategies to interact respectfully with people who hold different opinions.

In other community- and service-related business, the village manager reported that weekly composting pickup has begun for LRS refuse customers (most households received bins last year); the manager also noted LRS home hazardous-waste collection is available in April with some restrictions, and seasonal use of gas-powered leaf blowers is permitted during the spring window provided in village ordinance.

Sustainability Commissioner Sandy Weiss urged residents to embrace composting, explaining its greenhouse-gas benefits compared with landfill disposal and its value as a soil amendment; Weiss referenced Northbrook’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) as the policy context. Public-safety and environmental proclamations were read: the board proclaimed April 12–18 as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and recognized Michael Tracy, communications supervisor, and the board proclaimed an Earth Day observance and Arbor Day recognition.

Finally, the board moved to convene in closed session to discuss purchase of property (5 ILCS 120/2(c)(5)) and compensation of specific employees (5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1)); the motion passed by roll call.

Next steps: staff to finalize arrangements with Braver Angels and the library for the October workshop, and communications staff to share composting and disposal guidance with residents through village channels.
