The Chickasaw County Board on May 10 signed federal‑aid agreements with the Iowa DOT for a surface transportation block grant overlay (project STP‑SD‑CO19126‑5E‑19) and a bridge deck overlay (BHS CO 19127‑63‑19) and approved the county’s purchase of a tandem‑axle dump truck.
County engineering staff told the board the STP grant would cover up to 80% of construction cost or approximately $1,810,000, whichever is less, for the concrete overlay on U‑56. The engineering representative also said the bridge overlay project (Bridge 18‑10) is estimated at about $232,000 and will be funded from the county bridge program.
On equipment, the engineer presented three quotes and recommended the low Freightliner bid from Truck Country at $351,621.81. The engineer explained maintenance and operational reasons for preferring the Freightliner and noted the county budget included approximately $380,000 for FY‑27 equipment. The board approved the Freightliner purchase by motion (vote 4–0; Supervisor Scott absent).
The board also approved a wage increase for equipment operator Austin Reichs to $26.64 per hour effective May 24, 2026, to reflect the 6‑month contract step.
Why it matters: The DOT agreements advance scheduled road and bridge improvements funded largely through federal aid and county bridge dollars. The truck purchase and operator wage change are part of ongoing capital and workforce management for county roads operations.
Next steps: County staff will execute DOT agreements, manage construction scheduling with contractors and process the truck procurement and associated accounting.
