The Historic Preservation Commission was briefed on a demolition permit filed for 205 Remley Street and on ongoing efforts to preserve key historic features as the site moves toward new construction.
Commission staff said the project has been coordinated with the Historic Preservation Commission over the past two to three years and that, because the project scope expanded to demolition and new construction, it required a Section 106 review. "They had to redo the section 106 review and go through everything," the staff member said, adding that comments and a memorandum of understanding have been shared with commissioners.
Staff described an agreement with the Department of Natural Resources and the developer intended to retain and reuse historic elements from the building. "We're making an effort to recover, retain those as well as the slate steps outside for use in the project," the staff member said, and noted efforts to document and recover the building sign and interior finishes, including marble walls.
The staff update said the project design is being developed in accordance with the local zoning ordinance and that landscaping plans remain under review. Staff also noted that a previous review of the project occurred in July 2025 and that the documentation and comments from that review were provided to the commission.
No formal commission action was required or taken during the meeting on the demolition permit; staff characterized the report as an update and invited commissioners to ask questions.
The commission packet includes the staff report and photographic documentation of the elements the developer proposes to recover, according to the staff presentation. The commission did not set a further hearing date or vote on conditions at this meeting.
