The Sumner City Council approved Ordinance 2966 to vacate a portion of 63rd Street East and a section of State Street adjacent to the city’s wastewater treatment facility.
Deputy City Attorney Doug Ruth explained that vacating the roadway would allow the city to consolidate several security fences at the plant into a single entrance fence and eliminate right-of-way complications caused by buildings and parking areas that encroach into the right-of-way. He told the council the city had met statutory requirements, a public hearing was held on April 20, 2026, and staff had received no written objections to the vacation.
Ruth said vacating the roadway and converting it to city-owned land would simplify permitting when the facility wants to make changes. Mayor noted that no additional public comment would be taken that evening because a public hearing had already occurred. The clerk called the roll and the council voted unanimously to approve the ordinance.
Council directed staff to proceed with the vacation process consistent with state law and applicable permitting requirements.
