Zoning committee approves six-month extension of county solar permit moratorium

The Sawyer County Zoning Committee voted May 15 to extend an existing temporary moratorium on consideration or issuance of permits for solar energy systems and battery-energy storage systems for an additional six months.
Zoning staff explained the extension is a contingency to cover a possible gap if the county board does not adopt the proposed solar ordinance scheduled for its next meeting. Linda Zilmer urged careful collaboration with towns and said previous drafts required more time for town review. County counsel explained the extension amends the initial moratorium ordinance and is legally separate from the ordinance that would replace it.
Committee members approved the extension by voice vote after public comment and legal explanation. Staff said copies of the proposed solar ordinance are available online and noted the county board will also consider the ordinance at its upcoming meeting.
