Nutrition fund balance has decreased amid rising food costs; administrators asked the board to consider modest increases while preserving waivers for students eligible for free or reduced-price meals. The district also discussed whether to charge for activity shuttles that provide transportation across North Ankeny, Elkhart, Sheldahl and Polk City; any shuttle fee would be waived for students eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
Board members emphasized sensitivity to families and the need to avoid "fee creep," and asked staff to structure options (annual vs. per-season fees) and provide comparative data. One trustee said the increases proposed were "reasonable" given cost pressures and declining legislative funding.
