Commissioners discuss Housing Policy Institute in Green Bay and summer voter-engagement plans

Commissioners used part of the May 14 meeting to review planned community events and outreach. Committee member (voice S5) said the Housing Policy Institute — a two-day advocacy training — will be hosted in Green Bay this year; the event was rescheduled due to weather and staff are touring venues to set a date. S5 asked the commission to help advertise the training and to support outreach when details are finalized.
On voter engagement, S5 described plans for a summer "Rock the Vote" block-party that would bring a hubcap vehicle on-site to help residents find voter-registration information and identify barriers to voting. The commission discussed logistical constraints including permits, venue parking and transit access; Chair (S2) suggested engaging the city’s permitting staff and communications director to share logistics and promotional materials.
Commissioners also flagged several community events other members are organizing: a free-market back-to-school event on Aug. 8 targeting high-school and college-age students; a multicultural concert in July; and Juneteenth and Pride-related civic observances. S5 noted the need to ensure large events are on transit lines and have adequate parking and permitting support.
Commissioners agreed to support promotion and outreach within the scope of the commission’s advisory role and to coordinate volunteers and tabling opportunities for community events. Chair (S2) reiterated that any formal action requiring city resources or policy change would be brought to the full commission and appropriate city staff.
