Cranston council confirms Richard Mancini as fire chief after committee recommendation and public support

The Cranston City Council on May 20 confirmed Assistant Chief Richard Mancini as the next fire chief after a finance committee recommendation and public comment in favor of the appointment.
Jonathan Francis, who identified himself as "local 1363 fire president," rose in support of Mancini and urged the council to give advice and consent. The finance committee, represented by Councilman Andujar, reported that it had met May 4 and voted on the nomination and recommended passage.
A city representative presenting the nomination on behalf of Mayor Hopkins described Mancini as a veteran leader with more than 30 years of service who has risen through every rank and helped modernize the department. Several council members, including Council vice president Haroyan, Councilman Ritz and Councilman Bonanno, spoke in support of Mancini, praising his experience and relationships with both labor and administration.
The clerk called a roll-call vote; recorded affirmative votes were given by the council members present and the president announced the motion carried. After the vote, Richard Mancini addressed the council, saying he had "waited for this day" and noting his long service dating to 1988.
The council's action gives advice and consent to the mayor's nomination; no dissenting votes were recorded on the council floor.
