Board recognizes students and principals, and celebrates district reading gains

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board opened its May 19 meeting with a series of recognitions for students and school leaders.
Kids Voting North Alaska presenters described their nonpartisan voter‑education work and announced winners of the annual "I Voted" sticker contest; organizers reported 2,179 student participants from 13 schools and more than 400 contest entries. The board invited winning students to come forward for photos and public recognition.
Coach Chris Benchoff and Lathrop High School were honored after the school's Academic Decathlon team won the Division 3 national title in April. Benchoff listed team members and noted the team’s national medals and scholarship awards; he also said Lathrop has competed at nationals 18 times and that the program has now won multiple division national titles.
The board also recognized Becky Zverell of Denali Elementary as Fairbanks Principals Association elementary principal of the year and Joshua Snow of Effie Cochran Charter School as the FPA secondary principal of the year; FPA speakers described their leadership and community impact.
Superintendent Dr. Meinert told the board the district saw significant reading gains this year: nearly 96% of schools reported MAP reading gains, and districtwide reading proficiency rose from 60% to 71%, surpassing the district target. He named three district educators who were selected as DEED Alaska Reading Ambassadors.
The board offered congratulations to the students and staff. No action was required; the recognitions were ceremonial.
