Board highlights special education supports and WorkAbility placements in LCAP presentation

The ABC Unified School District board on May 19 heard a presentation on Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) Goal 4, which focuses on special education supports, inclusive practices and post‑school transition services.
Special education staff walked trustees through classroom strategies (universal design for learning, scaffolded instruction and small‑group work), use of adaptive and assistive technology, and the district’s WorkAbility placements that give students with IEPs on‑the‑job experience. A parent and community advisory committee member described growth in family participation at LCAP meetings—from only a few parents to large gatherings—and said the increased engagement had improved services.
“We train our special education teachers on the latest technology to personalize and empower our students,” a district special education leader said during the presentation, describing tools and teacher professional development used to expand inclusive opportunities.
Board members praised the work. Trustee Rios emphasized that special education labels should not define students’ futures and urged the district to share success stories about students who graduate and go on to higher education or careers. Trustee McCann noted student placements in City of Artesia work sites and encouraged expansion of community partnerships.
