A planning representative told councilors the ordinance will mirror the conditions the city already imposes under conditional-use permitting but will simplify and streamline approvals. "If you want to do a short-term rental within the city, it's just a conditional use permit," the planner said; the city’s proposed change would codify conditions in an ordinance and require operators to be Lewiston residents to prevent outside investors from buying local homes solely for short-term rental income.
Officials said a public hearing on the ordinance is expected, potentially as soon as next month though timing could slip. The ordinance will be drafted and routed through planning and zoning hearings before returning to the council for final action.
