The Athens Area School District board voted Thursday to direct the superintendent and business manager to develop a recommendation for a new operational structure intended to stabilize district finances while preserving student opportunities.
The directive, read as a board memo, asks for analysis of fiscal scenarios and options for the district’s operations. Superintendent Dr. Stage said he would return recommendations and indicated he expected to have something for the board in June. “We do not need a study done. We have all the data… My only question to you is when do you want this? I will have something to you guys in June,” he said.
While directing that review, the board moved through a slate of routine and substantive business. It approved two rounds of personnel items: the first covered resignations, retirements, new contracts, summer stipends and position changes including elimination of some part‑time paraprofessional positions and the Wildcat Exploration block aid job description; the second approved a school psychologist and behavioral intervention specialist summer-days memo on a separate roll-call (Mr. White recorded a "No" vote on that item).
The board also approved a group of contracts and agreements — including nursing contracts, occupational therapy services, BoardDocs software, and a Job Corps partnership — and confirmed the hiring of a new school nurse, Nicole Henry, who will be placed at Athens Area High School next year.
In other business, the board accepted a donation from the Athens Wrestling Club to purchase new wrestling mats (approximately $14,000 as described in the board memo). Superintendent Dr. Stage thanked the wrestling club and said the donation would be put to use.
The meeting concluded after board communications and a brief visitor-comment period; the board scheduled a brief executive session following the meeting and set its next meeting for the coming week.
