Council spotlights firefighter and EMS health and equipment needs; schedules related hearings

During the May 20 meeting, multiple councilors raised concerns about firefighter health and long-term occupational risks and pushed for budget or supplemental funding.
Councilors Murphy and Flynn described the loss of a roughly $1.2 million federal grant that previously funded cancer screenings, mental-health supports and wellness programming for firefighters; they said $150,000 was identified but $980,000 remained unfunded. Murphy said she will file amendments seeking to fund the remaining needs and called for a hearing and follow-up oversight.
Councilor Culpepper filed an order (docket 1057) for a hearing on PFAS chemicals in turnout gear and the transition to PFAS-free alternatives, citing occupational-safety research and state steps toward replacement. Councilor Worrell and Culpepper also requested a hearing on FY26 snow and winter management costs to examine drivers of rising expenses and look for efficiencies.
Separately, councilors adopted docket 0979, a $49,476 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services for firefighter safety equipment (elevator kits and carbon monoxide detectors), and recognized EMS Week with an adopted resolution.
