Danbury ad hoc committee backs acquisition of 166.4‑square‑foot parcel at 233 White Street
Summary
An ad hoc Danbury City committee voted to recommend that the full City Council approve a tax resolution to acquire a 166.4‑square‑foot triangular strip at 233 White Street after staff said a mapping error omitted the parcel; an appraisal placed the value at $1,350 and staff said the land is needed immediately for ongoing road work.

Joe Britton, chair of the Danbury City ad hoc committee on the partial acquisition of 233 White Street, called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. and said the panel would consider acquiring a small triangular portion of land omitted from the original survey.
Corporation counsel Eric Hotchog told the committee that a mapping error omitted 166.4 square feet that otherwise falls within the street boundary. "A flaw was detected that omitted 166.4 square feet that would otherwise be within the boundaries of White Street," Hotchog said, adding that staff had prepared a deed and a partial release for an existing mortgage and obtained an appraisal of $1,350.
The committee heard from public works staff that the small triangle — roughly 5.3 feet at its wide end with long sides of about 77 feet and 74 feet — lies inside an active construction area. "We're actually supposed to be building a road over this 166 square feet," said the city engineer, who emphasized the need to secure the parcel quickly because of contractor scheduling: "It's very important that I get this acquired right away because right now I'm keeping a contract on the other side of the job."
Committee members confirmed that the parcel had been staked and inspected. Members asked whether funds were available; finance staff said the money to pay the fee exists but did not provide an account number on the record.
Based on the presentations and site confirmation, a committee member moved "to recommend to the full City Council approval of the tax resolution authorizing the acquisition of a portion of 233 White Street." The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote; no member voiced opposition and the chair said the motion carried.
The committee recommended the tax resolution to the full City Council for final action. The meeting adjourned at 6:37 p.m.
Next steps: the recommended tax resolution will appear before the full City Council for consideration; the date and time for that council action were not specified at the ad hoc meeting.
