Martinsville City board approves $350,000 settlement in levy-project property dispute

The Martinsville City Board of Works and Public Safety approved a settlement on April 13 to resolve a property claim arising from the city’s levy project.
City attorney/representative Mr. Coffey told the board a lawsuit filed in February 2025 by the Sue Hayden Removal Trust alleged inverse condemnation related to right-of-way and construction associated with a roadway and a lift station. "There's been an appraisal on the real estate. It would be for a total of $350,000," Coffey said, describing the amount as covering acquisition and damages.
Board members had no further questions and voted to approve the settlement. Coffey said funds to pay the settlement are available within the Levy Project budget.
The board took no additional public action beyond approving the settlement and confirmed the payment would come from Levy Project funds.
