Commissioners add letter supporting Western North Carolina rail grant to consent agenda

Commissioner Ball put forward a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation asking the board to support a North Carolina Department of Transportation grant that would modernize rail safety and advance the long-term goal of restoring passenger rail service to Western North Carolina.
"It will not only help improve freight rail in Western North Carolina, but it will help lead us towards our ultimate goal of bringing back passenger rail to our part of the state," Commissioner Ball said, urging the board to endorse the county-level letter of support. He said the work would also improve safety at more than 40 highway grade crossings.
Chair (the meeting chair) asked whether there were questions and indicated that, if there was consent, the letter could be placed on the evening's consent agenda. Multiple commissioners voiced support and no commissioner objected; the chair said the item would be moved to the consent agenda.
The staff recommendation to add the letter on the consent agenda was presented as a noncontroversial, time-sensitive step to meet NCDOT's requested timeline for submitting supporting letters.
