Webster Groves — Commissioners debated whether to formally adopt a name for the business district now that streetscape work is underway. The district has been referred to as "Crossroads" during prior planning efforts and appears on some banners, but some members said the name is not widely known and suggested alternatives, including returning to the historic reference "Little Webster."
Members asked the Webster Historical Society to search for earlier signage and recommended the group consider branding, a logo and banners tied to the streetscape project. "If we want to rename it, now is the time, and we need to do it officially and appropriately," the chair said, urging the commission to bring name ideas to a future meeting.
Why it matters: commissioners said the streetscape and a possible grand reopening offer an opportunity for brand awareness and a coordinated marketing push. Some members warned that the word "little" may carry negative connotations for branding; others supported preserving the Webster name in any selected title. The commission agreed to defer the final decision and requested suggestions and any historical evidence before the next meeting.
What’s next: Staff will consult the historical society for signs or earlier uses of names and the commission will discuss submitted name proposals at the next meeting.
